Russian missile attack: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy went to Sweden on Saturday. This was his first time visiting the country since Russia’s big invasion of Ukraine last year. Back in Ukraine, a missile attack happened in the middle of a city in the north. It killed five people and hurt many others.
The government of Sweden mentioned that Zelenskyy will talk to important people in a place called Harpsund, which is around 120 kilometers away from Stockholm. He’ll also meet Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia at a palace there.
A Russian missile attack happened on Saturday in the city center of Chernihiv, a place in northern Ukraine. This attack killed five people and hurt 37 others. The Interior Minister named Ihor Klymenko told about this.
Zelenskyy condemned the attack
The leader of Ukraine, Zelenskyy, spoke out against this attack. He mentioned that the missile hit various buildings in the city, including a theater and a university.
The Ukrainian president wrote on a messaging app called Telegram, saying that this is what it’s like when a place is dealing with a state that supports terrorism. He said that the world should stand together against this. He described how the missile from Russia hit the heart of Chernihiv city, affecting places like a square, the polytechnic university, and a theater. He mentioned that what should have been a normal Saturday turned into a day of pain and loss because of Russia’s actions.
President Vladimir Putin visited top military officials
In Russia, President Vladimir Putin went to meet important military leaders in the city of Rostov-on-Don, which is close to Ukraine. The people in charge of the government in Russia, called the Kremlin, said that Putin listened to information from Valery Gerasimov. Gerasimov is the person who is leading Moscow’s actions in Ukraine. Putin also talked with other important military leaders at a place where the Southern Military District of Russia operates.
The exact time when Putin visited was not officially confirmed, but the media owned by the government shared a video that seemed to be taken at night. In the video, Gerasimov welcomed Putin and took him into a building. The meeting itself happened in private, so the details are not publicly known.
Putin came to visit, and this was the first visit since the Wagner mercenary group’s attempted rebellion in June. During that time, the Wagner group briefly took control of Rostov-on-Don. The leader of Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, kept criticizing Gerasimov and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu because they didn’t give enough supplies to his fighters in Ukraine.

Prigozhin said the rebellion wasn’t about Putin; it was about getting rid of Gerasimov and other top military leaders who he thought were mishandling the war in Ukraine.
This week, Ukraine said they had made gains in their counteroffensive in the southeastern front. They managed to retake control of the village of Urozhaine in the Donetsk region on Wednesday.
The leader of the Russian battalion trying to hold onto Urozhaine asked for a “freeze” in the fighting on Thursday. He said his troops couldn’t win against Ukraine.
Alexander Khodakovsky, the leader, said in a video that they couldn’t defeat Ukraine militarily right now.
During Saturday night, Ukraine’s air force said they shot down 15 out of 17 Russian drones that were targeting different areas in Ukraine.
In the western Khmelnytskyi region, an attack wounded two people and damaged many buildings, according to Serhii Tiurin, the deputy governor.
In the Zhytomyr region, a Russian drone attack hit a facility and caused a fire, but nobody was hurt, said Gov. Vitalii Bunechko.
Will Ukraine give up Kyiv for NATO membership?Â
A high-ranking official from Nato, an organization that involves several countries working together for security, has upset people in Ukraine. The official suggested that Ukraine might give some of its land to Russia in order to become a member of Nato.
This official, Stian Jenssen, who is a top assistant to the Nato leader, talked about this idea at an event in Norway. He said that a potential agreement for peace might involve Ukraine giving back some of the land it took control of.
According to a news report by the Guardian, Mr. Jenssen said, “I think that a solution could be for Ukraine to give up territory, and get Nato membership in return.”
However, he made it clear that any peace agreement would need to be agreeable to Ukraine. He mentioned that this was just one option being talked about in diplomatic discussions.
The leaders in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, have stated that there can’t be real peace unless Russia gives back the land it took and goes back to the borders that existed before 2014. This would also mean returning the area known as Crimea, which Russia claimed.
Mykhailo Podolyak, an important adviser to Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, expressed his opinion on Twitter, saying, “Trading land for Nato protection? That’s absurd.”
This means purposely choosing to weaken democracy, supporting global criminals, keeping the Russian government in power, breaking international laws, and passing the burden of war to future generations.
The defense alliance attempted to put an end to the idea on Tuesday night, stating that their stance hadn’t changed.
“We will keep aiding Ukraine for as long as needed and are committed to achieving a fair and lasting peace. The alliance’s stance is clear and hasn’t changed,” a spokesperson said.
Mr. Jenssen is a close assistant to Nato’s top leader, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
He also mentioned to a Norwegian newspaper VG: “I’m not saying it has to be this way, but that might be a potential solution.”
On Wednesday, Ukrainian officials celebrated a significant development in Kyiv’s ongoing counteroffensive. Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar said that their troops had regained control of a village in the eastern Donetsk region.
The village named Urozhaine is close to Staromaiorske, a small settlement that Ukraine also asserted to have recaptured recently.
Ukraine seems to be attempting to separate Russian forces in the south, but they are facing strong defensive positions and are advancing without air support.
